Valencia vs Málaga is a common choice for developers who want Spanish sun and a lower cost of living than Madrid or Barcelona. The two are closer than they look. On 16 October 2026, our board listed 78 English-speaking tech jobs in Valencia at 18 companies and 74 in Málaga at 12 companies. Valencia is the bigger city, leaves slightly more take-home pay on most salaries and has lower living costs per person. Málaga’s tech jobs are concentrated in a few large hubs, especially in cybersecurity and consulting. Rents have risen fast in both.
This guide compares them on jobs, employers, pay after tax, rent, living costs and language. It uses our own job data and official statistics, and it says which is which.

Tech jobs: Valencia vs Málaga
Both cities are a long way behind Madrid and Barcelona. In our October 2026 report, Valencia and Málaga each had 3% of the 2,583 jobs on the board, against 30% for Barcelona and 27% for Madrid. Expect a smaller market, fewer employers and less choice if you change jobs.
IT jobs in Valencia
Our Valencia page listed 78 jobs at 18 companies on 16 October 2026. The employers that week were a mix of:
- Product and fintech companies: Sales Layer, Ebury, DKB Code Factory and Speechify.
- Space and hardware engineering: ICEYE (satellites), Analog Devices, Bosch and Magna International, with roles in chip design, verification and test.
- Consultancies: Capgemini, Accenture and Avenga.
Python, Kotlin and SQL were the most requested stacks; see Python jobs in Valencia. If you work in embedded systems, hardware design or test engineering, Valencia stands out for its size.
Tech jobs in Málaga
Our Málaga page listed 74 jobs at 12 companies. Fewer employers, but several with many openings:
- EY GDS (EY’s Global Delivery Services), with many cybersecurity roles (threat hunting, SIEM, penetration testing) and SAP and cloud roles.
- Vodafone, with product and engineering roles, including AI infrastructure.
- Rindus, Avanade, Accenture and Betsson Group, with SAP, ERP, DevOps and mobile roles.
AWS, Kubernetes and SQL were the top stacks (AWS jobs in Málaga). If you work in security, SAP or cloud consulting, Málaga has more openings than its size suggests. If you want product start-ups, the choice is narrower.
Visa sponsorship and remote work
None of the jobs in either city mentioned visa sponsorship that week. Remote work was also less common than nationally: 8% of Valencia’s jobs and 5% of Málaga’s were fully remote, against 32% across the board. Many people who live in Valencia or Málaga work remotely for companies based elsewhere in Spain: browse our remote jobs, which had 829 openings.
Pay and take-home pay
Salaries
Too few ads in either city state a salary for a reliable median: our monthly report only shows a city with at least five. For a sense of national levels, the median posted salary on the whole board was €74,500 in October 2026, and €60,500 in Madrid. Our software engineer salaries guide has more.
Official averages for all jobs are lower in both regions than in Madrid or Catalonia: €26,816.98 in the Comunitat Valenciana and €26,089.70 in Andalucía in 2024, against a Spanish average of €29,540.26 (INE). That is part of why rents and prices are lower, and why a tech salary goes further.
Tax: Valencia vs Andalucía
Each region sets its own income tax scale. From our salary after tax calculator, single person, no children, 2026 rules:
| Gross salary | Take-home in Valencia | Take-home in Málaga |
|---|---|---|
| €40,000 | €29,801 | €29,719 |
| €50,000 | €35,765 | €35,609 |
| €60,000 | €41,519 | €41,500 |
| €70,000 | €47,212 | €47,419 |
| €80,000 | €52,477 | €52,907 |
| €100,000 | €62,734 | €63,883 |
The difference is small up to about €60,000. Above that, Andalucía’s scale is lighter, and on €100,000 Málaga leaves you about €1,150 more a year. Both are a little below Madrid; see €60,000 in Valencia and €60,000 in Málaga. If you move to Spain for work, the Beckham Law’s flat 24% rate is the same in every region: see our tax guide.
Cost of living: Valencia vs Málaga
Rent
Rents have risen faster in both cities than in Madrid or Barcelona. The INE’s rental index, based on real contracts in tax records, shows (INE):
- Valencia: up 5.9% in 2024 and 36.4% between 2015 and 2024.
- Málaga: up 5.2% in 2024 and 32.7% between 2015 and 2024.
- For comparison, Madrid rose 22.6% and Barcelona 24.6% over the same period.
The INE index shows change, not euro amounts. Check property portals for current asking rents in the areas you are considering, and look at real listings for a few weeks before you commit.
Neither city appeared on the March 2024 list of stressed housing market zones, which only included municipalities in Catalonia (Resolution of 14 March 2024). So the special rent caps that apply in Barcelona did not apply here then. The normal national rules do: a deposit of one month’s rent, extra guarantees capped at two months on most long-term contracts, agency fees paid by the landlord, and a minimum term of five years if you want to stay (Ley 29/1994).
Everyday spending
The INE’s household budget survey gives an official comparison of overall spending by region. In 2025, the average person spent (INE):
- €13,704 in the Comunitat Valenciana, 97.4% of the Spanish average;
- €12,197 in Andalucía, 86.7% of the Spanish average;
- compared with €15,017 in Catalonia and €16,124 in the Comunidad de Madrid.
These are regional averages and include smaller towns, so the cities themselves cost more. But the gap with Madrid and Barcelona is real: on a tech salary, you keep more of your pay in either city. For a detailed breakdown of a big-city budget, see our cost of living in Barcelona guide.
Language
In Málaga, Spanish is the only official language. In Valencia, Valencian and Spanish are both official, and everyone has the right to know and use both (Statute of Autonomy of the Comunitat Valenciana, article 6). In practice, Spanish is widely used in the city of Valencia, and the jobs on our board are in English. Valencian matters most if you have children in public schools or deal with the regional administration.
Learning Spanish helps in both cities more than in Madrid or Barcelona, because the international community is smaller. See our guide to getting a tech job in Spain without Spanish.
Lifestyle: what developers weigh up
- Size. Valencia is Spain’s third-largest city, with a big university and a flat, cycle-friendly centre. Málaga is smaller and more compact, set between hills and the sea.
- Climate. Both are on the Mediterranean coast, with mild winters and hot summers.
- Tourism. Both are popular with visitors, which affects the old towns and short-term rents.
- Connections. Both have international airports and high-speed trains to Madrid, which matters if your employer asks you to visit an office there.
Which should you choose?
Choose Valencia if:
- you want the larger of the two job markets, with more employers (18 against 12 on our board);
- you work in embedded, hardware, product design or fintech;
- you want the bigger city, with lower spending per person than Madrid or Barcelona.
Choose Málaga if:
- your skills are in cybersecurity, SAP, cloud or consulting, where Málaga’s hubs hire;
- you earn well above €70,000, where Andalucía’s lighter income tax helps a little;
- you prefer a smaller, more compact city.
Choose either with a remote job if your employer is elsewhere in Spain. Then compare rent and lifestyle only, and keep in mind that Madrid and Barcelona have far more local jobs if you need to change. Our Madrid vs Barcelona guide covers those two.
